Lapwings

Lapwings

This new puzzle features a pair of lapwings and their nest. The traditional terms `plover`, `lapwing` and `dotterel` were coined long before modern understandings of the relationships between different groups of birds emerged: in consequence, several of the Vanellinae are still often called `plovers`, and the reverse also applies, albeit more rarely, to some Charadriinae (the `true` plovers and dotterels). The birds in this puzzle are Northern Lapwing. The Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), also known as the Peewit, Green Plover or (in the British Isles) just Lapwing, is a bird in the plover family. It is common through temperate Eurasia. It is highly migratory over most of its extensive range, wintering further south as far as north Africa, northern India, Pakistan, and parts of China. It is a wader which breeds on cultivated land and other short vegetation habitats. 3 – 4 eggs are laid in a ground scrape. The nest and young are defended noisily and aggressively against all intruders, up to and including horses and cattle.

Chameleon On A Branch

Chameleon On A Branch

Chameleons are a highly specialized clade of Old World lizards with 202 species that live in warm habitats that range from rain forest to desert conditions, with various species occurring in Africa, Madagascar, southern Europe, and across southern Asia as far as Sri Lanka. As you might already know some chameleon species are able to change their skin coloration. Color change in chameleons has functions in camouflage, but most commonly in social signaling and in reactions to temperature and other conditions. All chameleons are primarily insectivores that feed by ballistically projecting their long tongues from their mouths to capture prey located some distance away. Chameleons have the most distinctive eyes of any reptile. Each eye can pivot and focus independently, allowing the chameleon to observe two different objects simultaneously. Chameleons have very good eyesight for reptiles, letting them see small insects from a 5–10 meter distance. They can also see in both visible and ultraviolet light.
