St David's Cathedral

St Davids Cathedral is situated in St Davids in the county of Pembrokeshire, on the most westerly point of Wales. The monastic community was founded by Saint David, Abbot of Menevia, who died in 589. In 1081, William the Conqueror visited St Davids to pray, and thus recognised it as a holy and respected place. In 1115, with the area under Norman control, King Henry I of England appointed Bishop Bernard as Bishop of St Davids. He began to improve life within the community, and commenced construction of a new cathedral. The new cathedral was quickly constructed and Bishop Bernard consecrated it in 1131. The present cathedral was begun in 1181 and completed not long after.

The church's double-towered front and the roof with its cupolas and roof lanterns give it an unusual appearance that distinguishes it from the other churches of Wurzburg. It was built following plans by Balthasar Neumann in the mid-18th century in Rococo style.

It's construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington, and was completed on January 10, 1791 using a fund of $1,500, established by him. It is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine. The tower was built of rubblestone and it stands 80 feet (24 m) above ground and 101 feet (31 m) above water. Today the light station is automated, and the tower, beacon, and foghorn are maintained by the United States Coast Guard, while the former lighthouse keepers' house is a maritime museum.

The construction date of the church remains unknown but documents suggest that it was built before the year 1447. The church has a cruciform architectural plan, with a rectangular base. The church is dedicated to John of Patmos, the writer of Revelation, who has been by some considered to be the same person as John the Apostle.
