Known for its two-round towers and arched entrance, it is regarded today as a symbol of the city. The two towers and the central block appear as one construction when viewed from the city side. The tower is 324 meters (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building, and the tallest structure in Paris. The tower has three levels for visitors, with restaurants on the first and second levels. The top level's upper platform is 276 m above the ground – the highest observation deck accessible to the public in Europe. The Eiffel Tower was the world's tallest structure when completed in 1889, a distinction it retained until 1929 when the Chrysler Building in New York City was finished. The tower is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. More than 250 million people have visited the tower since it was completed in 1889.
