About: Dating back to 1776, Castle Verwolde in Laren (Holland) is located in gorgeous surroundings in a large private country estate. On its estate there is a tree, said to be the thickest tree in the Netherlands ( "de dikke boom van Verwolde"). For 200 years, Castle Verwolde was inhabited by various generations of the same family. In summer, guided tours of this castle are organized for tourists.

Inveraray Castle is a country house near Inveraray in the county of Argyll, in western Scotland, on the shore of Loch Fyne. This castle, built in the Gothic Revival style, replaced an earlier 15th-century castle. Work on the current building began in 1743. In 1975 a devastating fire struck Inveraray and for some time the 12th Duke and his family lived in the castle's basement, while restorations requiring a worldwide fundraising drive were carried out. he 13th Duke and his family live in private apartments occupying two floors and set between two of the four crenellated circular towers. Parts of the castle are open to visitors.

The Kaleto Fortress was originally built by the Romans and later expanded by the Byzantines, Bulgarians and Turks. Most of what you see today was completed in the 1830s. The rock formations in the area served as a natural protection, as fortified walls were practically only built from the northwest and southeast.

The impressive building on the rocky seashore in the top left corner of the puzzle image is Fort Lovrijenac ( or St. Lawrence Fortress). Often called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar",the fortress is located outside the western wall of the city. It stands 37 m above sea level. Lovrijenac has a triangular shape with three terraces. The thickness of the walls facing the outside reach 12 m. On the right side of the image (where you can see a medieval canon) you can also see part of Fort Bokar.

The castle in Bobolice was built by King Casimir III the Great in the middle of the 14th century. It was a part of the defense system of royal strongholds protecting the western border of Poland. The castle is situated on a steep rocky hill and it was accessible through a drawbridge over the dry moat, and the entire construction was surrounded by walls with battlement.

The Scaligero Castle is a fortress from the Scaliger era (The Della Scala family, whose members were known as Scaligeri ,was the ruling family of Verona and mainland Veneto (except for Venice) from 13th to 14th century, for a total of 125 years) located in Sirmione (a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, northern Italy). Thanks to its strategical geographical location as a border outpost, Sirmione became a crucial defense and control garrison for the ruling nobles, retaining this function until the sixteenth century. The massive fortress is totally surrounded by water and from the drawbridge, a staircase leads to the walkways above the walls, providing a marvelous view of the harbour.

The Golubac Fortress was a medieval fortified town on the south side of the Danube River, 4 km (2.5 mi) downstream from the modern-day town of Golubac, Serbia. It is strategically located on the embankment of the Danube River where it narrows to form the Iron Gate gorge. It was the last military outpost on that stretch of the Danube river, which caused it to frequently be part of the final line of defense between Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The fortress consists of three main compounds guarded by 9 towers, 2 portcullises and a palace, all connected by fortress walls 2 to 3 m thick.

It is famous for having been the location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, in which the leaders of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States made important decisions affecting the shape of post World War II Europe and Asia. The Potsdam Conference (officially the "Berlin Conference") took place from 17 July to 2 August 1945. Cecilienhof has been part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.

Schloss Ort is an Austrian castle situated in the Traunsee lake, in Gmunden. It was built around 1080 by Hartnidus of Ort, and improvements continued to be made into the thirteenth century. From 1484 to 1491, the castle was governed by Gotthard von Starhenberg, the Governor of Upper Austria. In 1492, Bernhard of Starhenberg and later his descendants ruled the castle until 1584. In 1876, the castle was acquired by Archduke John Salvator of Austria (John of Tuscany). The castle was later acquired by Franz Joseph I of Austria (in 1914). On January 5, 1995, the castle was officially acquired by the city of Gmunden. At present the castle is being used for a study center of the Federal Ministry for Land and Forestry.
