Hohensalzburg Castle

Hohensalzburg castle is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. It is located in the Austrian city of Salzburg, atop the Festungsberg mountain. Construction of the fortress began in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard von Helfenstein. The ring walls and towers were built in 1462 under Prince-Archbishop Burkhard II von Weißpriach. Prince-Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach during his term from 1495 until 1519 further expanded the castle. In the 19th century, it was used as barracks, storage depot and dungeon before being abandoned as a military outpost in 1861. Hohensalzburg castle was refurbished from the late 19th century onwards and became a major tourist attraction with the Festungsbahn cable car, opened in 1892, leading up from the town to the Hasengrabenbastei. It stands today as one of the best preserved castles in Europe.

Corvin Castle was laid out in 1446, when construction began at the orders of John Hunyadi ( Romanian: Iancu or Ioan de Hunedoara) who wanted to transform the former keep built by Charles I of Hungary. Built in a Renaissance-Gothic style and constructed over the site of an older fortification on a rock above the small Zlaști River, the castle is a large and imposing structure with tall towers, bastions, an inner courtyard, diversely coloured roofs, and myriads of windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings.

Today the Herstmonceux Castle (a brick-built Tudor castle near Herstmonceux, East Sussex, England) is used by the Bader International Study Centre of Queen's University, Canada. The original castle was dismantled in 1777 leaving the exterior walls standing and remained a ruin until the early 20th century. Radical restoration work was undertaken by Colonel Lowther in 1913 to transform the ruined building into a residence and completed for Sir Paul Latham in 1933 by the architect, Walter Godfrey.

A Gothic castle was built on the same site in the second half of the 13th century and it was rebuilt several times. Architects Franz Beer and F. Deworetzky built a the Romantic Neo-Gothic chateau featured in this puzzle from 1841 to 1871, and surrounded it by a 1.9-square-kilometre English park. This castle was built by Lafon, who was knighted by Charles VIII in recognition of his bravery during the wars of Italy, in the late fifteenth century . It is located in Autoire - one of the most beautiful villages in the Lot department in southwestern France. The village of Autoire is nestled in an impressive cirque formed by high limestone cliffs. Known as "Limargue Castle" the manor house, featured in today's new jigsaw puzzle, revolves around the tower with a spiral staircase. The main entrance to the house at the bottom of the tower is decorated with intricately carved arch, characteristic of the customs of the last quarter of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century.

Its inauguration was held in 1883. Its architectural style is a romantically inspired blend Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival similar to Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria. A towering statue of King Carol I by Raffaello Romanelli overlooks the main entrance. Many other statues are present on the seven Italian neo-Renaissance terrace gardens, mostly of Carrara marble executed by the Italian sculptor Romanelli. The gardens also host fountains, urns, stairways, guarding lions, marble paths, and other decorative pieces.

After the defeat of France during the Franco-Prussian War and according to the Treaty of Frankfurt, the city was annexed into the German Empire, being part of the Imperial Territory of Alsace-Lorraine and serving as capital of the German Department of Lorraine. Metz remained German until the end of World War I, when it reverted to France. However, after the Battle of France during the Second World War, the city was annexed once more by the German Third Reich.In 1944, the attack on the city by the U.S. Third Army freed the city from German rule.
