About: For centuries the residence of the kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish statehood, the Wawel Castle is located in central Kraków, Poland. It was built at the behest of King Casimir III the Great and it consists of a number of structures situated around the Italian-styled main courtyard. The castle is one of the largest in Poland and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Inveraray Castle is a country house near Inveraray in the county of Argyll, in western Scotland, on the shore of Loch Fyne. This castle, built in the Gothic Revival style, replaced an earlier 15th-century castle. Work on the current building began in 1743. In 1975 a devastating fire struck Inveraray and for some time the 12th Duke and his family lived in the castle's basement, while restorations requiring a worldwide fundraising drive were carried out. he 13th Duke and his family live in private apartments occupying two floors and set between two of the four crenellated circular towers. Parts of the castle are open to visitors.

Pierrefonds Castel

The beautiful castle featured in this puzzle is situated in the commune of Pierrefonds in the Oise departement (Picardy) of France. In the 12th century, a castle was built on this site. Two centuries later, in 1392, King Charles VI turned the County of Valois (of which Pierrefonds was part) into a Duchy and gave it to his brother Louis, Duke of Orléans. From 1393 to his death in 1407, the latter had the castle rebuilt by the court architect, Jean le Noir. Napoleon I bought ruined castle in 1810 for less than 3,000 francs. During the 19th century, with the rediscovery of the architectural heritage of the Middle Ages, it became a "romantic ruin". Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (later Napoleon III of France) visited the castle in 1850. As emperor, he asked Viollet-le-Duc in 1857 to undertake its restoration.

The fortifications consist of two castles joined by a crenelated curtain wall. Within the complex, among other buildings, are two churches. The older Church of the Virgin, which abuts a tall square tower. It dates from the first half of the 17th century, and was built of brick. The larger Church of the Mother of God, is a central dome style structure with richly decorated facades, including a carved north entrance and a carved grapevine cross on the south facade.

Located near Kværndrup, in the south of the island of Funen, Denmark, Egeskov Castle is Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle (a castle or stately home whose site is entirely surrounded by water-filled moats). The castle structure was erected by Frands Brockenhuus in 1554. The castle consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall, allowing defenders to abandon one house and continue fighting from the other. The architecture includes depressed and round-arched windows, round-arched blank arcading within the gables, and a double string course between the high cellar and the ground floor. Surrounding the castle is an old park divided into a number of gardens featuring fountains, a gravel path and topiary figures.

The rock formations in the area served as a natural protection, as fortified walls were practically only built from the northwest and southeast.

Thanks to its strategical geographical location as a border outpost, Sirmione became a crucial defense and control garrison for the ruling nobles, retaining this function until the sixteenth century. The massive fortress is totally surrounded by water and from the drawbridge, a staircase leads to the walkways above the walls, providing a marvelous view of the harbour.
