The Bird Catchers

The Bird Catchers

Today's new puzzle is based on a painting from 1748 by Francois Boucher - a French painter in the Rococo style. Boucher is known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings on classical themes, decorative allegories, and pastoral scenes. The painting in today's jigsaw depicts fashionable couples in the act of catching birds. In the 1700s, small birds played an important symbolic role in courtship ritual: the gift of a caged bird from a man to a woman signified her capture of his heart.
Packet Ship

Packet Ship

This new puzzle is based on a painting by Thomas Chambers of a packet ship. Packet ships were small boats designed for domestic mail, passenger and freight transportation in Europe and its colonies, including North American rivers and canals. They were extensively used for much of the 18th century and in the 19th century, and featured regularly scheduled service. The American canal packet boats were typically narrow (about 14 feet) to accommodate canals, but might be 70–90 feet long. They could carry up to 60 passengers.

Gerard Johnson Carving

Gerard Johnson Carving

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Wallis depicting Gerard Johnson carving Shakespeare's funerary monument. Ben Jonson shows Shakespeare's death mask to the sculptor. Gerard Johnson (flourished c. 1612–1623) is the Anglicised form of Gheerart Janssen, a sculptor who worked in Jacobean England and who is thought to have created Shakespeare's funerary monument. In 1849 a death mask was discovered in Germany, and was claimed to be Shakespeare's. It received great publicity when the anatomist Richard Owen authenticated it and suggested that it was used by Johnson as the model for the memorial. Henry Wallis later painted this imagined scene validating the mask. The mask is no longer considered to be authentic.
Boating

Boating

A challenging jigsaw puzzle based on Edouard Manet's painting with the same name. Boating is the manifesto of Manet's new allegiance to Impressionism. Manet's biographers recount that Rodolphe Leenhoff, the painter's brother-in-law, posed for the figure of the sailor. The oil on canvas painting was done in 1874.

Bush Idyll

Bush Idyll

Today's new puzzle is based on the 1893 painting with the same name by Frederick McCubbin. The painting depicts a girl and boy (who is playing a whistle) lying on the ground near a lake in a forest. In 1998 McCubbin's painting sold for $2,312,500, a then-record price for an Australian painting at public auction. Bush Idyll is presently on long term display in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra on loan from a private collection.
The Meeting of David and Abigail

The Meeting of David and Abigail

Based on the painting by Peter Paul Rubens(Flemish, 1577 - 1640) with thee same name, the picture featured in this art themed puzzle depicts the meeting of Abigail and David. Nabal of Carmel, Abigail's husband, had refused to pay for the protection that David had provided for his shepherds. Angered, David set off to avenge this misdeed with a large group of soldiers. Seeking his forgiveness, Abigail, is shown kneeling in this painting by Rubens. If you don't know the entire biblical scene the story ends with Nabal's dying from a stroke after learning of the disaster his wife helped to avert. Impressed with Abigail David then proposed marriage. If you didn't know, in the biblical narrative, David is a young shepherd who first gains fame as a musician(the Book of Samuel calls David a skillful harp player and "the sweet psalmist of Israel) and later by killing Goliath; after Saul (the king)is killed in battle David is anointed as King.
