This new puzzle is based on an oil on panel painting by James Ward (1769– 17 November 1859) - a painter, particularly of animals, and an engraver. James Ward was one of the outstanding artists of the day, his singular style and great skill set him above most of his contemporaries, markedly influencing the growth of British art. In this painting he combined various bird species, such as the roseate spoonbill from North America and the stork found in Europe and North Africa.

This puzzle is based on the oil on canvas painting by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh with the same name. Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Remy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an imaginary village. Van Gogh depicted the view at different times of the day and under various weather conditions, including sunrise, moonrise, sunshine-filled days, overcast days, windy days, and one day with rain. The Starry Night is the only nocturne in the series of views from his bedroom window.

It has been suggested that Cassatt may have been inspired by Edouard Manet's Boating from 1874 when making the painting. Boating was exhibited at the Impressionist Exhibition of 1879, where it was not well received. Cassatt however, convinced her friend Louisine Havemeyer to buy it. Cassatt painted The Boating Party during the winter of 1893–1894 in Antibes, on the French Riviera.
