About: Cacti in pots may be placed outside in the summer to ornament gardens or patios, and then kept under cover during the winter. They are usually grown as houseplants, many being tolerant of the often dry atmosphere. They are also drought-resistant plants recommended for dry landscape gardening. The word "cactus" derives, through Latin, from the Ancient Greek kaktos, a name originally used by Theophrastus for a spiny plant whose identity is not certain. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north.
