About: It's harvest time and we're in the orchard picking the last of this year's pears. If you didn't know, pears, like many other climacteric fruits ( apples, bananas, melons, apricots, and tomatoes, among others), are gathered before they are fully ripe, while they are still green, but snap off when lifted. They are eaten fresh, canned, as juice, dried or as jellies and jams. The pear tree is medium-sized and native to coastal as well as mildly temperate regions of Europe, north Africa and Asia.
