The Villa del Balbianello is a villa in the comune of Lenno, Italy, overlooking Lake Como. It was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. By the early twentieth century, the buildings had fallen into a state of neglect when American businessman Butler Ames purchased and renovated the villa and its garden. An icon of San Francisco, California, the cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway, or "Muni" as it is better known. Of the twenty-three lines established between 1873 and 1890, three remain: two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, and a third route along California Street. The first successful cable-operated street railway was the Clay Street Hill Railroad, which opened on August 2, 1873. The cable cars are pulled by a cable running below the street, held by a grip that extends from the car through a slit in the street surface, between the rails.

It is a gateway from the sea to the old inner city at Kongens Nytorv (King's Square), where ships handled cargo and fishermens' catch. The first bridge across Nyhavn opened on 6 February 1875. The northern side of Nyhavn is lined by brightly colored townhouses built with wood, bricks, and plaster.
