City of Arts and Sciences
An entertainment-based cultural and architectural complex in the city of Valencia, Spain, the City of Arts and Sciences is an impressive and beautiful urban landmark. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela, the project underwent the first stages of construction in July 1996 and the finished "city" was inaugurated April 16, 1998 with the opening of L'Hemisferic (the larger building on the right of today's puzzle). Today we're going for a train ride in an old steam powered train. Steam locomotives were first developed in Great Britain during the early 19th century and dominated railway transport until the middle of the 20th century.
In today's new jigsaw puzzle we feature a great view of a small island hosting a light tower. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational systems. Before modern strobe lights, lenses were used to concentrate the light from a continuous source. Vertical light rays of the lamp are redirected into a horizontal plane, and horizontally the light is focused into one or a few directions at a time, with the light beam swept around.
