The Old Bridge In Mostar Play

The Old Bridge In Mostar

Mostar is a city and municipality in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks. During the armed conflict between Bosniaks and Bosnian Croats in the Bosnian War in the 1990s, the bridge was destroyed by the HVO (Croatian Defence Council). Since the end of the wider war in 1995, great progress has been made in the reconstruction of the city of Mostar. A monumental project to rebuild the Old Bridge, which was destroyed during the Bosnian War, to the original design, and restore surrounding structures and historic neighbourhoods was initiated in 1999 and mostly completed by Spring 2004.

The Villa del Balbianello is a villa in the comune of Lenno, Italy, overlooking Lake Como. It was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. By the early twentieth century, the buildings had fallen into a state of neglect when American businessman Butler Ames purchased and renovated the villa and its garden. In 1974, Ames's heirs sold the villa to explorer Guido Monzino (leader of the first Italian expedition to climb Mount Everest), who filled it with rich collections, including artifacts acquired on his expeditions. Monzino, who died in 1988, left the villa to the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, the National Trust of Italy. Its grounds now form part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani.

The city's name became La Canea and its fortifications were strengthened, giving Chania the form that it still has today. he walls of the city did not prevent the Ottoman army from overrunning the city in 1645.
