Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created the sculpture's design (featuring the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) and oversaw the project's execution from 1927 to 1941. The memorial is carved on the northwest margin of the Black Elk Peak granite batholith in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mount Rushmore is the state's top tourist attraction. Globes serve similar purposes to maps, but unlike maps, do not distort the surface that they portray except to scale it down. Flat maps are created using a map projection that inevitably introduces an increasing amount of distortion the larger the area that the map shows.
