Emoticon Colorful Balls

Emoticon Colorful Balls

On web sites, instant messengers and online games, text emoticons are often automatically replaced with small corresponding images like the ones on the colorful balls featured in today's new puzzle. In 1963 the "smiley face", a yellow button with two black dots representing eyes and an upturned thick curve representing a mouth was created by freelance artist Harvey Ball. This smiley presumably inspired many later emoticons; the most basic graphic emoticon that depicts this is in fact a small yellow smiley face. Digital forms of emoticons on the Internet were included in a proposal by Scott Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a message on 19 September 1982. Nowadays emoticons are available in most web or mobile applications that offer text input to the user; they sometimes come bundles in some fonts, have a diversity of colors, shapes and themes and sometimes are also animated or surrounded by animated effects.
Maneki-Neko

Maneki-Neko

This kind of waiving cat statues are called maneki-neko ( literally "beckoning cat" in Japanese; also know in English as welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, beckoning cat, or fortune cat ) and are common Japanese figurines which are often believed to bring good luck to their owner. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—often at the entrance—of shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric powered and have the beckoning paw moving slowly up and down in a waiving motion.

Wind Farm

Wind Farm

If you didn't know, a wind farm or wind park, is a group of wind turbines used to produce electricity. Wind turbines convert the wind's kinetic energy into electrical energy. Wind farms tend to have much less impact on the environment than many other power stations. The location is critical to the success of a wind farm. The faster the average wind speed, the more electricity the wind turbine will generate.

Brightly Colored Buttons

Brightly Colored Buttons

If you didn't already know, a button is a small fastener, made of plastic, metal, wood, or seashell, that joins two pieces of fabric together. Buttons and button-like objects have been used as ornaments or seals rather than fasteners since as long ago as 3000 BC. Functional buttons with buttonholes, like the brightly colored ones featured in today's puzzle, for fastening or closing clothes appeared first in Germany in the 13th century.

The use of wax-based mediums in crayons can be traced back to the Greek Golden Age.
