About Malayan Banded Pitta: The Malayan Banded Pitta (Hydrornis irena) is a stocky, short-tailed forest bird with a pale buff head, vivid orange-red underparts, and a bold black breast band, offset by deep blue wings and tail. It inhabits lowland tropical rainforests of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, where it moves deliberately along the forest floor in dense understory. Feeding mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, it relies on stealth rather than speed. Males and females are similar in appearance, though females are slightly duller. Despite its brilliant coloration, the species is often hard to observe and is more frequently detected by its call than by sight. // Image Credit: Gould, John. 1880. “Van Der Bosch’s Pitta, Eucichla Boschii.” Monograph of the Pittidae 1.

The pile is untamed, scattered rather than stacked, yet it hums with the promise of future warmth. Firewood has long been a companion through winters, its steady flames offering both light and survival. Freshly cut, these logs are still heavy with moisture, needing months to season before they’ll burn clean and hot. Hardwoods will smolder for hours, while softwoods will leap into flame, each playing their part in the dance of fire. Standing by this pile, one can almost smell the faint sweetness of sap and imagine the crackle of a hearth to come.
