About The Satin Bowerbird: The Satin Bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus) is a medium-sized bird native to eastern Australia. Adult males are glossy black with a blue sheen and bright blue eyes, while females and juveniles are greenish-brown with barred underparts. They live in forests and woodlands, feeding mainly on fruits, insects, and seeds. Males are known for building and maintaining ground structures called bowers, made from sticks. They decorate these with objects such as feathers, shells, berries, and other items, often selecting blue-colored materials. The bower is used to attract females for mating, but it is not used as a nest. Females build separate nests in trees and raise the young on their own. // Image Credit: Wolf, Joseph, and Philip Lutley Sclater. 1861. Zoological Sketches. Vol. 2. London: Henry Graves
