About Calves by the Beach: Calves by the Beach (1896) by Theodor Philipsen depicts a serene coastal scene where young cattle graze and rest near the shore under a vast, sunlit sky. The calm blue water and open horizon convey a sense of peace and spaciousness. Philipsen’s loose, impressionistic brushwork captures the shifting light and texture of grass, fur, and clouds with delicate precision. Warm earth tones of the calves contrast beautifully with the cool blues of the sea and sky. The animals appear at ease in their natural surroundings, embodying the quiet rhythm of rural life. Painted outdoors, the work reflects Philipsen’s fascination with natural light and atmosphere. Influenced by French Impressionism, he adapted its techniques to Danish landscapes with a distinctly local sensibility. The result is a luminous portrayal of harmony between land, sea, and living creatures. // Image Credit: Theodor Philipsen, Statens Museum for Kunst

Based on a painting by Henri Fantin-Latour, today's puzzle features a beautiful flower arrangement. If you didn't know, flower arrangements play a large part in the decor of special events and meetings. Bridal bouquets, wedding chuppahs, entryways, centerpieces and reception tables are only a few examples of where flower arrangements are used. Flowers can be arranged in vases, bowls, baskets, or other containers, or made into bouquets. These kinds of arrangements usually also include ornamental grasses, leaves, herbs, and other plant materials.

The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the third-largest land mammal by weight, after the elephant and the white rhinoceros. Hippos spend much of their time in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun. Despite their bulky size, they can run surprisingly fast on land, reaching speeds up to 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. Hippos are highly territorial in water, particularly males, and can be extremely aggressive when threatened. They primarily feed on grasses, grazing at night for up to six hours and consuming about 40 kg (88 lbs) daily. Their closest living relatives are whales and dolphins, with which they share a common ancestor from around 55 million years ago.

In Still Life with Guitar, Juan Gris masterfully arranges a composition of fragmented forms, where a guitar dominates the center, flanked by a goblet, fruit bowl, and sheet music. The painting exemplifies Synthetic Cubism, using bold contours, overlapping planes, and rich, flat color blocks to create depth without traditional perspective. Gris employs a warm palette of ochres, greens, and reds, balanced with cool blues and blacks, lending a rhythmic harmony to the visual field. The guitar’s strings and curves contrast with the angular lines of the surrounding objects, emphasizing both abstraction and the suggestion of real forms. Subtle texture and shading add dimensionality to otherwise flattened shapes, showing Gris’s skill in merging analytical clarity with visual poetry. This work reflects his intent not just to depict objects, but to reconstruct their essence through a refined, intellectual lens.
