About Landscape with Houses: Landscape with Houses is an oil painting on canvas created between 1920 and 1925 by Slovak painter Gustáv Mallý. It is part of the Slovak National Gallery collection and shows his interest in the Slovak countryside and everyday rural life. The painting captures a peaceful village scene under a bright blue sky filled with soft white clouds. A narrow stream runs through the center, with dirt paths on both sides connecting the houses and the surrounding land. In the middle of the shallow water, a woman sits and washes something in the stream, her quiet activity adding life and movement to the landscape. Around her, the land is warm and sunlit, painted in tones of ochre, green, and brown. Tall trees rise among the small village houses, including a slender poplar that stands out and draws the viewer’s eye upward. The houses, with their red and brown roofs, seem naturally connected to the land. Mallý’s loose brushstrokes and rich natural colors create a sense of warmth, light, and calm. The painting expresses not only the appearance of the village but also its peaceful rhythm and harmony between people and nature. // Image Credit: Gustáv Mallý – Landscape with Houses, 20. storo?ie, 1. polovica, 1920–1925, Slovenská národná galéria, SNG
