About Loggia, Procida: In Loggia, Procida painted in 1835, Danish Golden Age artist Martinus Rørbye transforms a modest terrace into a scene of luminous Mediterranean calm. Beneath a fragile trellis of vines, sunlight filters across the whitewashed wall in flickering leaf-shaped shadows, turning the loggia into a quiet theatre of light. Terracotta pots crowd the corner with dense green plants, while lemons, dried leaves, a dark ceramic jar, a hanging birdcage, and a slender plant stand suggest everyday life just beyond view. At the left, the low wall opens suddenly onto pale blue sea, distant hills, and a small white sailboat, balancing domestic intimacy with open air and travel. Painted in oil on paper mounted on canvas, the work feels immediate and observant, as if Rørbye paused in the heat of the afternoon to capture the terrace’s stillness before the light changed. // Image Credit: Martinus Rørbye, 1835, Nationalmuseum (Photo :Cecilia Heisser), public domain.

The wood ibis, also known as the wood stork, is a large wader with white plumage, a long, curved bill, and striking black flight feathers. The scarlet ibis, native to South America, is renowned for its vibrant red plumage, which it derives from a diet rich in carotenoid pigments found in crustaceans. The white ibis, a common sight in wetlands across the Americas, is easily identified by its white feathers, pink legs, and curved orange bill, ideal for probing mud for invertebrates. The flamingo, with its unmistakable pink plumage and elegantly curved neck, thrives in saline and alkaline lakes, feeding on algae and brine shrimp using its unique filter-feeding beak. While the wood ibis prefers freshwater marshes and swamps, the ibises are more versatile, occupying both coastal and inland wetlands. Flamingos and ibises share a social nature, often gathering in large flocks.

Still Life with Roses and Fruit (1863) by Henri Fantin-Latour presents a simple tabletop arrangement of pale roses in a glass vase beside clusters of grapes and a ripe pear. Set against a dark, unobtrusive background, the soft light and muted palette draw attention to the velvety petals, translucent fruit, and subtle shifts of texture. Rather than dramatizing the scene, Fantin-Latour emphasizes quiet harmony and careful observation. His restrained composition and delicate brushwork give the everyday objects a contemplative, almost poetic presence. The painting reflects his early mastery of tonal balance and the refined naturalism that would define his later still lifes.

This watercolor depicts a quiet Venetian harbor where boats rest close to shore under a pale, clouded sky. Light is the true subject, broken into soft washes of blue, green, and yellow that shimmer across the water and masts. The forms are loosely defined, with graphite lines visible beneath transparent color, emphasizing movement over precision. Painted in 1903, the work reflects Henri-Edmond Cross’s interest in atmosphere and color rather than detailed description. Although Cross is best known as a Neo-Impressionist painter, this piece shows a freer, more lyrical approach suited to watercolor. The modest scale suggests it was made as a study or travel sketch rather than a finished exhibition work. Boats, buildings, and figures dissolve into rhythm and light, conveying Venice as a place of passing moments rather than fixed landmarks. The scene feels suspended in calm, shaped more by sunlight and water than by human presence.
