About On Their Way to Camp: On Their Way to Camp by Eastman Johnson is a richly detailed genre painting completed in 1873, inspired by the artist’s earlier studies of maple sugar camps in Maine. During the early 1860s, Johnson had aimed to create a grand work on the subject that would rival historical paintings in scale, but he ultimately abandoned that project in 1865. This painting draws from those earlier observations, depicting two boys pulling a sled with a large sap barrel through a snowy forest. A third, younger boy rides atop the barrel, holding a wooden bucket, while the trees around them show signs of being tapped for sap. Although Johnson had previously focused on the bustling labor of making sugar, here he captures a quieter, more contemplative moment. This work stands out as the only fully completed painting related to the sugar-making theme and is considered an important and successful piece within his body of work. // Image Credit: Eastman Johnson, Courtesy National Gallery of Art, Washington

Mosses are non-vascular plants that can grow in a variety of environments, including on the branches of trees in forests. Mosses do not have true roots, so they absorb water and nutrients directly through their leaves. In forests, moss can grow on tree branches that provide a suitable substrate and conditions for growth. This can include branches that are shaded, moist, and have a rough surface, which can provide a good foothold for the moss to attach and grow. Additionally, the presence of moss on tree branches can also indicate high humidity levels in the forest, which can create an ideal environment for moss growth. This is because mosses require a lot of moisture to survive and reproduce, and high humidity levels can help to provide this. Overall, the growth of moss on tree branches in the forest is a natural process that is influenced by a variety of environmental factors.
