About Arfak Astrapia: The Arfak Astrapia (Astrapia nigra) is a striking bird-of-paradise endemic to the Arfak and Tamrau Mountains on the Vogelkop Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia. Males can reach up to 76 cm in length, including their dramatically elongated tail feathers, making them among the largest in their genus. They are known for their velvety jet-black heads, iridescent green-yellow mantles, and shimmering purple-blue highlights, with tails that can extend nearly twice the length of their bodies. In contrast, females are much smaller (around 50 cm), with plain brownish-black plumage and significantly shorter tails. Arfak Astrapias primarily feed on pandanus fruits, but they also forage for arthropods among moss-covered branches in montane cloud forests at elevations of 1,700-2,250 m. // Image Credit: Sharpe, Richard Bowdler. 1891.
