About Belted Kingfisher: The Belted Kingfisher is a medium-sized, fish-eating bird commonly found along rivers, lakes, and coastal waters throughout North America. It has a shaggy crest, a large dagger-like bill, and blue-gray plumage with a white collar across the neck. Males have a single blue breast band, while females have an additional rusty band, making them more brightly colored. The species hunts by hovering over water and diving headfirst to catch fish and aquatic invertebrates. Belted Kingfishers nest in burrows that they excavate in earthen banks, sometimes extending tunnels more than six feet long. Their rattling, mechanical call is often heard before the bird is seen. They are highly territorial and maintain long stretches of shoreline for feeding. // Image Credit: Fuertes, Louis Agassiz. "Plate 48: Black-billed Cuckoo, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Belted Kingfisher."
