About Red-crowned Cranes: Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) are large, elegant birds native to East Asia, particularly found in parts of Japan, China, Korea, and eastern Russia. They are among the rarest crane species, with a global population estimated at fewer than 3,000 individuals. These cranes are known for their distinctive red patch of bare skin on the top of their heads, which becomes brighter during mating displays. They primarily inhabit wetlands, marshes, and riverbanks, relying on these ecosystems for breeding and feeding. Red-crowned cranes are omnivorous, eating a diet of aquatic invertebrates, small vertebrates, and plant material such as reeds and rice. They are monogamous and perform elaborate courtship dances involving synchronized jumping, calling, and wing flapping. // Image Credit: Wolf, Joseph, and Philip Lutley Sclater. 1861.
