About The Eland: The eland is the largest antelope species in the world, with males weighing up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs). There are two main species: the common eland and the giant eland, both native to various regions of Africa. Elands are known for their spiral-shaped horns, which both males and females possess, although males’ are typically thicker. Despite their massive size, elands are surprisingly agile and can jump over 2 meters (6.5 feet) from a standing position. They are herbivores and graze on grasses, leaves, and branches, often surviving in arid regions by obtaining moisture from plants. Elands live in herds, sometimes mixing males and females or forming bachelor groups, and they’re generally non-territorial. // Image Credit: Wolf, Joseph, and Philip Lutley Sclater. 1861. Pretzels are a type of baked bread product typically made from dough, shaped into a twisted knot-like form. They're often seasoned with salt, though there are various flavorings available, such as sesame seeds, poppy seeds, cheese, cinnamon sugar, or chocolate. Pretzels have a long history, with origins traced back to Europe, possibly in the Early Middle Ages. They were initially associated with monasteries, where they were given as rewards to children who had memorized their prayers. Pretzels come in various shapes, but the most iconic is the twisted knot shape, resembling a looped knot. Other shapes include sticks, rods, and even pretzel bites. They come in different types, including hard pretzels, which are crunchy and often served as snacks; and soft pretzels, which are larger, softer, and sometimes served hot with various dips like mustard or cheese sauce.
The image featured in today's puzzle captures the intricate textures and natural patterns found on a tree trunk, highlighting the bark’s rugged surface adorned with patches of yellow-green lichen. The bark serves as the protective outer layer of the tree, shielding it from physical damage, pests, and environmental stressors like extreme weather. Bark also plays a critical role in the tree's health, acting as a barrier against infections and water loss. Its texture and appearance vary by species, but in this case, the deeply ridged and cracked surface suggests an older, mature tree. The lichens growing on the bark are fascinating composite organisms, consisting of a symbiotic partnership between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. The fungi provide structure and protection, while the algae or cyanobacteria contribute to photosynthesis, producing food. Lichens are indicators of environmental health, thriving in clean air but sensitive to pollution.
