About The White-fronted Amazon: The White-fronted Amazon is a lively, small parrot whose crisp white brow and ruby-red mask give it an air of perpetual curiosity. Cloaked mostly in emerald green, it flashes sapphire and gold when it takes flight, like sunlight breaking through a forest canopy. Found from Mexico to Costa Rica, this spirited bird thrives in dry woodlands and open forests, where its chatter carries far above the treetops. Its diet is a tropical feast of fruits, seeds, and blossoms, often pilfered from nearby farms with clever precision. Playful and intelligent, it moves in tight-knit flocks that burst into laughter-like calls at dawn and dusk. During nesting season, pairs retreat to tree hollows, where the female incubates her clutch while the male stands guard. Though smaller than most of its Amazon cousins, its personality fills the canopy. In the wild, the White-fronted Amazon is a symphony of color, noise, and boundless charm. // Image Credit: Greene, W. "Still Life with a Roemer" (1652) by Jan Davidsz. de Heem is a sumptuous Dutch Baroque still life that artfully combines fruit, seafood, and exquisite glassware into a tightly focused composition. Central to the scene is a Roemer glass- a type of drinking vessel popular in the Rhineland and the Netherlands from the 15th to 17th centuries, known for its green forest-glass color, hollow stem studded with glass prunts, and a round or ovoid bowl designed for white wine. Surrounding the glass are peaches, plums, grapes (both red and white), and a peeled lemon with its long, curling rind - a classic Vanitas symbol of fleeting sensuality. A silver platter holds some fruit alongside a lone green olive or unripe plum, while grape vines and leaves flow around the arrangement, providing lush movement and depth. Off to the right, a red crab and a shrimp lie on a green draped cloth, reinforcing themes of marine luxury and the impermanence of indulgence. De Heem's masterful chiaroscuro, precise brushwork, and rich textures bring out the luminous surfaces of skin, glass, metal, and flesh. Altogether, the painting operates as a quiet meditation on abundance, mortality, and the transience of worldly pleasures, characteristic of the Vanitas tradition in 17th‑century Dutch art.

The Red River Hog (Potamochoerus porcus) is a wild member of the pig family native to the rainforests, savannas, and wetlands of West and Central Africa. It is easily recognized by its reddish-brown fur, black legs, white facial markings, and distinctive tufted ears. Red River Hogs are omnivorous, feeding on roots, fruits, insects, small animals, and carrion. They are primarily nocturnal and highly social, typically living in groups called sounders, which are often led by a dominant male. These hogs are excellent diggers and use their snouts to root through soil in search of food. Though not currently endangered, their populations are impacted by habitat loss and hunting in some regions.

Nuthatches are skilled foragers often found in woodlands and gardens across North America, Europe, and Asia. Nuthatches are known for their ability to move headfirst down tree trunks and even hang upside-down while foraging for insects and seeds. They build their nests in tree cavities and crevices, often using mud and other materials to seal the entrance and create a cozy, safe space for raising their young. The name "nuthatch" comes from the bird's feeding behavior. These beautiful birds have a unique way of opening nuts, such as acorns or hazelnuts. They wedge the nuts in a crevice and use their strong bills to hammer or "hatch" them open. This puzzle is based on an 1768 illustration by James Bolton.
