It has been suggested that Cassatt may have been inspired by Edouard Manet's Boating from 1874 when making the painting. Boating was exhibited at the Impressionist Exhibition of 1879, where it was not well received. Cassatt however, convinced her friend Louisine Havemeyer to buy it. Cassatt painted The Boating Party during the winter of 1893–1894 in Antibes, on the French Riviera.

Longing for tranquil settings, van Gogh began to paint beyond the city fortifications and along the banks of the Seine, in Asnières and the island of Grand Jatte. He experimented with a lighter, more colorful palette than used in his early Dutch paintings or Montmartre series.
