About The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776: John Trumbull’s The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 presents the founding of the United States as a formal act of collective memory. Inside the chamber of Independence Hall, the drafting committee stands before John Hancock with Thomas Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration. John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin occupy the center of the composition, surrounded by delegates arranged in rows of quiet attention. The painting has the character of both a history scene and a group portrait. Trumbull uses the architecture, the draped flags, the gathered papers, and the carefully posed figures to give the moment a sense of dignity and ceremony. Although the title refers to July 4, 1776, the image is not a literal scene of the signing. It represents the broader process of presenting, debating, and approving the Declaration, while preserving the likenesses of many of the men associated with it. Painted in oil on canvas between 1786 and 1820, the work belongs to the Trumbull Collection at the Yale University Art Gallery. Its relatively small size contrasts with the importance of its subject, turning a crowded political assembly into an enduring image of American independence, order, and historical remembrance. // Image Credit: John Trumbull (American, 1756–1843)
