The saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana, it's flowers are featured in this puzzle) typically grows to a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) and a width of 15-25 feet (4.5-7.5 meters), with a rounded or spreading shape. Its leaves are dark green and oval-shaped, and can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) long. One of the most striking features of the saucer magnolia is its large, cup-shaped flowers, which can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter. The flowers are usually pink or purplish-pink, with a white interior and a subtle fragrance. They bloom in early spring, before the leaves appear, and last for several weeks. It is a cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, and was first bred in France in the early 19th century.
