About River Landscape in Winter: Wilho Sjöström’s River Landscape in Winter (1910–1919) captures the serene beauty of the Finnish countryside in the colder months. A river winds through the composition, its surface mirroring the surrounding pine forest and a sky lit with soft pastel hues of yellow, peach, and lavender. Snow blankets the riverbanks in smooth, sculpted forms, creating a striking contrast between the deep, cold water and the gentle whiteness of the landscape. The cluster of evergreens on the right adds depth and anchors the scene with rich dark tones, while the distant horizon dissolves into pale blues and violets, suggesting vast open fields beyond. Sjöström’s fluid brushwork and luminous color palette convey both the stillness and subtle vitality of winter. Rather than portraying the season as harsh or desolate, he reveals a quiet radiance—nature resting yet alive beneath the snow. The painting reflects the early 20th-century Finnish appreciation for national landscapes, capturing a moment of crisp calm where land, water, and sky blend in tranquil harmony. // Image Credit: Wilho Sjöström, Finnish National Gallery / Aleks Talve
This new puzzle is based on "The Art of Painting", also known as "The Allegory of Painting", or "Painter in his Studio", is a 17th-century oil on canvas painting by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The painting depicts an artist painting a woman dressed in blue posing as a model in his studio. The painter was thought to be a self-portrait of the artist and it has been suggested that the young woman could be his daughter. The painting is considered a work with significance for Vermeer because he did not part with it or sell it, even when he was in debt.

Today's puzzle is based on the 1888 painting with the same name. Also known as Entrance Gate to a Farm with Haystacks, Farmhouse in Provence is an oil-on-canvas by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. At the time that Van Gogh made this beautiful painting, he was 35 years old and living in Arles, in southern France. During this period he produced some of his best work, such as fields, farmhouses and people of the Arles and Avignon area. As you might of already noticed, Van Gogh used several pairs of complementary colors in the Farmhouse in Provence, the color contrast bringing an intensity to his work.
Featuring a seamless and smooth color gradient unfolding in a spiral pattern, seamlessly transitioning from luscious pinks to fresh greens, tranquil blues, and radiant yellows, reds and oranges, today's new puzzle is not just a visual delight; it's a vibrant adventure waiting to be unraveled. If you didn't already know, a gradient refers to a gradual blend or transition between two or more colors. Gradients are often employed to add depth, dimension, and a sense of movement to images. In visual arts and design, gradients come in various forms, including linear gradients with straight color transitions, radial gradients emanating from a central point, angular gradients following curved paths, diamond gradients transitioning toward corners, reflected gradients with symmetrical mirroring, conical gradients creating circular three-dimensional effects, and sweep gradients resembling brushstrokes.
This painting featured in today's puzzle, Fruit and Flowers by Orsola Maddalena Caccia, is a vibrant and detailed still life composition. It features a rich arrangement of fruits and flowers carefully displayed against a dark background. The painting is characteristic of the Baroque period, with its intricate detailing, dramatic lighting, and naturalistic depiction of textures. The artwork includes an abundant variety of fruits such as apples, pears, plums, peaches, and pomegranates, each rendered with great attention to color and form. The fruits appear ripe and fresh, with some showing small imperfections, enhancing their realism. Among the fruits are various flowers, including tulips, irises, and roses, adding elegance and contrast to the composition.
Flower Beds in Holland by Vincent van Gogh depicts a tranquil Dutch countryside scene, showcasing neat rows of colorful flowers in full bloom. The composition leads the eye through the bands of tulips in shades of pink, blue, yellow, and white, evoking a sense of order and natural beauty. A lone figure walks among the flower beds, adding a human element to the pastoral setting. Thatched-roof cottages with dark, earthy tones anchor the background, contrasting with the vivid hues of the foreground. The sky is overcast, painted in soft grays and blues, lending a muted, peaceful atmosphere. Van Gogh captures both the vibrancy of nature and the quiet rhythm of rural life.
In today's puzzle we feature some colorful ornamental cactuses. If you didn't know, most cacti live in dry environments and occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most species of cactuses have lost true leaves, retaining only spines. The spines defend the plant against herbivores and also help to prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus.
Golden leaves linger on slender branches, suspended between what has been and what is about to arrive. Against the endless blue, they glow with quiet confidence, catching light as if each one knows its time is temporary. The tree does not resist the shift - it wears it openly, beautifully - letting color replace certainty and movement replace stillness. This is the season where change is not abrupt, but graceful: a slow turning, a breath held between warmth and cold, reminding us that transformation can be both gentle and luminous.
Today's new puzzle is based on a beautiful still life painting by Everhart Kuhn. Take a few minutes, put it back together and complete today's puzzle. Have fun!
The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is the third-largest land mammal by weight, after the elephant and the white rhinoceros. Hippos spend much of their time in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun. Despite their bulky size, they can run surprisingly fast on land, reaching speeds up to 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. Hippos are highly territorial in water, particularly males, and can be extremely aggressive when threatened. They primarily feed on grasses, grazing at night for up to six hours and consuming about 40 kg (88 lbs) daily. Their closest living relatives are whales and dolphins, with which they share a common ancestor from around 55 million years ago.
