About Alpacas: Alpacas are domesticated camelids native to South America, primarily found in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. They are closely related to llamas but are generally smaller and bred mainly for their fiber rather than as pack animals. Alpaca fiber is soft, lightweight, and warmer than sheep’s wool, making it highly valued in the textile industry. There are two breeds of alpacas: Huacaya, which has fluffy, crimped wool, and Suri, with long, silky locks. Alpacas come in a wide range of natural colors, with over 20 recognized shades including white, fawn, brown, gray, and black. They are herbivores and graze on grass, hay, and other vegetation. Alpacas are social animals that live in herds, often communicating through body language and soft humming sounds, and they have a lifespan of about 15–20 years. // Image Credit: Wolf, Joseph, and Philip Lutley Sclater. 1861.
