About Pink Onions: Henri Matisse’s Pink Onions depicts a tabletop arrangement of pink onions and patterned ceramic jugs painted in simplified, vibrant forms. The onions’ green shoots rise vertically, contrasting with the flat, horizontal plane of the table. Two bold color fields—a turquoise green and a sky blue—divide the background, giving the composition balance and light. Matisse uses loose, visible brushwork, focusing on rhythm and color harmony rather than realistic detail. Created around 1906–1907, the piece reflects his Fauvist experimentation with expressive color and decorative design. The ornate jug echoes the natural lines of the onions, uniting nature and craftsmanship. Despite its humble subject, the work feels alive, joyful, and quietly meditative. Ultimately, Pink Onions transforms everyday objects into a lyrical study of form, pattern, and the beauty of ordinary life. // Image Credit: Henri Matisse, Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main
